General Motors’ announcement comes a week after Stellantis reported a $13 billion investment in the United States.
Mexico City, October 21 (However).- General Motors (GM) confirmed this Tuesday that it will close the plant CAMI Assemblylocated in Ingersoll, Ontarioafter ending the production of its electric trucks delivery BrightDropwhich leaves more than 1,200 workers that support much of the economy of the province.
“We have decided to stop BrightDrop production at the CAMI Assembly and evaluate the site for future opportunities,” executive director Mary Barra said, as reported. The Global Mail.
Since opening in 1989, CAMI Assembly had been the key economic driver for the Ingersoll region. The company indicated that BrightDrop vehicles will not be manufactured in any other plant, because market expectations for electric vehicles had not been as expected.

“These BrightDrop vans are specialized electric vehicles for commercial customers and we simply have not seen demand grow at the level we anticipated,” explained Kristian Aquilina, president and CEO of GM Canada, during the announcement at Ingersoll.
“This has nothing to do with tariffs or trade. It is simply a response to the market and demand,” he said.
General Motors stressed that Canada remains a central part of its North American operations and highlighted production in Oshawa and St. Catharines, as well as the construction of a $600 million battery materials plant in Quebec.
GM’s announcement comes a week after Stellantis reported a $13 billion investment in the United States over the next four years, which will move production of the Jeep Compass out of Ontario.
Given the news, the Minister of Finance of Ontario, Peter Bethlenfalvy, assured that the province will review the contracts with GM to determine how much has been invested, because for the most recent modernization of the factory, carried out in 2021, public resources were used: about 500 million came from the governments of Ontario and Canada of the total of two billion dollars.
“We are going to fight for every dollar we have given to protect those jobs and keep production here in Ontario,” he said. “The automotive and manufacturing sectors are an essential part of our economy. We acted quickly to support these industries, and we will continue to do so together with the federal government. We are not going to give up; we are going to fight back,” he said.
