The “Generation Z 212” movement in Morocco on Saturday organized demonstrations to renew its demands for education and health reform and the release of those arrested in connection with previous protests, while the government expressed its readiness for dialogue and accelerated social projects.
Hundreds of young people affiliated with the movement organized vigils in a number of cities, such as Rabat and Casablanca (west), and Tangier (north).
The youth chanted slogans demanding the release of detainees in connection with previous demonstrations, and the fight against corruption, including “release the detainees” and “freedom, dignity, social justice.”
The movement organized demonstrations between September 27 of last year and October 9 of this year, to demand reform of education and health and to fight corruption in the Kingdom, but they stopped temporarily, and then the movement decided to organize them every Saturday and Sunday.
Young people known as “Generation Z” who were born between the mid-1990s and the first years of this century, at the height of the modern technology and Internet revolution, participated in the demonstrations.
Following the demonstrations, the government accelerated several social projects, especially in the health and education sectors.
A week ago, the government allocated 140 billion dirhams ($14 billion) to the education and health sectors during the coming year, in addition to creating more than 27,000 job opportunities in the two sectors.
According to a government statement, the 2026 draft budget, which was referred to Parliament this October, stipulated the construction of several major hospitals in six cities, in addition to launching the process of rehabilitating and modernizing 90 hospitals.
The statement explained, “Work will be done to accelerate the activation of the road map to reform the educational system, by universalizing primary education (kindergarten), enhancing teaching support services, and improving the quality of education.”
