The adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to increase productivity in Public Administration (PA), contributing 1.2 billion euros annually, according to the report on its economic impact released this Monday.
“Generative AI has significant potential to increase productivity in Public Administration in Portugal, creating a 9% higher cost-benefit ratio, equivalent to an annual contribution of 1.2 billion euros”, is one of the main conclusions of “The AI opportunity for eGoverment in Portugal”.
The study on the economic impact on the application of generative AI in the Portuguese public sector was commissioned by Google from Implement Consulting Group and Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. The report also concludes that “the average productivity of each Public Administration professional could be up to 9% higher in ten years”.
For two-thirds of AP’s workforce (about 200,000 jobs), generative artificial intelligence technology could improve a significant portion of their tasks, making its integration into daily processes viable.
The report also shows that more than half of Portuguese public sector workers already use AI tools and 80% believe that these will be important in the next 10 years.
“The next National Artificial Intelligence Agenda must set ambitious goals and provide a clear roadmap to unlock most of the potential of AI for the public sector within five years and fully within 10 years,” the document reads.
