Did you know South African citizens can get free entrance to a few places in Cape Town on their birthdays?
This is an ideal opportunity if you’re planning a trip to the Mother City and would like to save some money or use what you would’ve paid towards something else.
Let’s take a look at the places you can visit for free and what you will need to get in.
Cape Wheel
A trip to the V&A Waterfront mall shouldn’t go without a round trip on the Cape Wheel. You can sign up by filling out a free application form on their website, which will then ensure you get an email with a free voucher on your birthday.
While the voucher is valid for 30 days, making it quite flexible if you can’t make it on the day, a printout of it and your ID are required when you visit. If you don’t have a printout of the voucher, you will only be able to visit on your actual birthday day with your ID.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
Taking the Aerial Cableway up to Table Mountain is one of the top sights to see when visiting the Mother City. To get a free ride up, you can redeem the Cableway Birthday Special ticket during the course of your birthday month. You simply need your ID, Driver’s License, or birth certificate to collect it at the Visitor Information Centre or Ticket Office.
Up Cycles
Rent a bicycle with Up Cycles and take a fun ride while exploring different areas in Cape Town. They have several stations where you can rent from, namely at Seapoint Pavilion, Silo 5 at the V&A Waterfront, The Bay Hotel at the Camps Bay Strip, and Prom Park at Mouille Point. Birthday specials include a free ride for the duration of one hour, and you will need to provide a form of identification.
Zeitz MOCAA
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art is at the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront. It’s one of the top art museums to visit, if you haven’t already. The museum has a selection of African art and its Diaspora preserving and promoting this cultural heritage and sharing it with the public through displays and education. You can visit them on any day during your birthday month with proof of identification to redeem your free entry.
While many places only offer these specials to South African citizens, if you are travelling from overseas, don’t be afraid to ask about the birthday specials if you’re celebrating it during your trip. Happy Birthday!
