Our health provocateur by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, titled “America”valued at 10 million dollars (around eight million euros), will be auctioned on November 18th, in New York. Created in 2016, the 18-carat piece is a satire on ostentation and excessive wealth.
The work will be displayed at Sotheby’s headquarters, in the Breuer building, from November 8, in a bathroom where visitors will be able to see it up close, but not use it. Described by the auctioneer as a “piercing commentary on the collision between art and market value”, “America” weighs 101 kilos and is fully functional.
Known for his provocations in the world of contemporary art, Cattelan became a global phenomenon in 2019 with “Comedian”one banana stuck to a wall with tape. Like the golden toilet, the banana sold for more than 100 thousand dollars challenged the notion of artistic value and the very market system that celebrated it.
“It doesn’t matter what you eat — a $200 lunch or a two-dollar hot dog — the result is the same,” Cattelan quipped at the time.
