Gouveia e Melo and Marques Mendes close the cycle of 28 presidential debates broadcast on RTP, SIC and TVI, which run from November 17th to December 22nd.
In total, RTP will broadcast 12 debates, SIC eight and TVI another eight, all free to air, in order to reach a wider number of viewers, in prime time (9pm).
In total there are 28 debates with eight candidates for the presidential elections: André Ventura, António Filipe, António José Seguro, Catarina Martins, Henrique Gouveia e Melo, João Cotrim de Figueiredo, Jorge Pinto and Luís Marques Mendes.
The first takes place on November 17th, on TVI, pitting candidates André Ventura and António José Seguro, and the last one takes place on December 22nd, with the face-to-face between Gouveia e Melo and Marques Mendes on TVI.
Due to several football games, there are days when there will be no debates, and this is also one of the reasons why they last until close to Christmas.
On November 25th, André Ventura debates with Marques Mendes, in a broadcast made by SIC, which on December 9th broadcasts the face-to-face between Gouveia e Melo and António José Seguro.
The confrontation between Marques Mendes and António José Seguro is broadcast by RTP, on December 3rd.
“The three FTA channels [de sinal aberto] proposed to presidential candidates to hold 28 face-to-face debates, in prime time. This represents a huge television investment by generalist channels”, say RTP, SIC and TVI.
“In this sense, we consider that holding other debates, in the same period, is not reasonable because it would contribute to diverting the attention of viewers, damaging the efforts of the three FTA channels and, secondly, the clarification of voters, since it would reach significantly lower audiences”, they conclude.
The elections are scheduled for January 18.
