The resolution of the Council of Ministers indicates that, contrary to what was announced in September, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing intends to sell 16 buildings at public auction. Initially, only nine properties were planned, all in Lisbon, but to these were added new buildings divided across the Porto district and with just one in the capital.
“There are assets that, based on our analysis, it does not make sense for us to have within the sphere of the State” either due to their location or the “potential for maximizing revenue”, Minister Miguel Pinto Luz had explained in the announcement in September. These buildings, which are owned by the Portuguese State and ESTAMO (a public company that manages the State’s real estate assets), are unoccupied due to the relocation of ministries and public entities to the Campus XXI building.
The objective is that the Revenue from the sale of these properties is used to finance public housing policies. The Government expects to raise 1,216 million euros from the sale of its properties (buildings and land), of which 1,036 million euros will come from the sale of buildings alone, according to the State Budget proposal for 2026.
