The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation has opened an additional 1,800 vacancies for Early Childhood Educators and Basic and Secondary Education teachers in Pedagogical Zone Frameworks in the regions of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, Península de Setúbal, Alentejo and Algarve, as part of a new extraordinary external competition.
According to a statement issued by Fernando Alexandre’s ministry, these vacancies were opened “in areas of the country marked as having a shortage of teachers” e “they seek to retain teachers through a stable and permanent relationship, which is one of the ways to respond to the difficulties of schools located in those territories in recruiting teachers”. It is also “a way to combat the challenge of aging faculty.”
According to Ordinance which sets vacancies, published in Diário da República, more than half of the vacancies (983) are in the Pedagogical Zone Framework (QZP) 45 (which includes the municipalities of Vila Franca de Xira, Loures, Sintra, Cascais, Oeiras, Amadora, Odivelas and Lisbon). There are 350 vacancies in QZP 46 (Almada, Seixal, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Alcochete, Palmela, Sesimbra and Setúbal); 135 for QZP 54 to 58, which cover the Alentejo region; and 280 for the Algarve QZP (59 to 63).
“A QZP is considered to be lacking if there is a structural shortage of teachers, that is, when the number of full and annual timetables without teachers placed is higher than the average recorded, in the 2024-2025 academic year, in all pedagogical zone staff”explains in note.
