The Government proposed this Wednesday, October 29th, to increase the meal allowance in the public sector by 10 cents per year from 2027, in order to reach 6.30 euros in 2029, said the coordinator of the Common Front.
“What the Government proposes […] It’s an increase in the perfectly miserable meal allowance”said Sebastião Santana, after leaving the meeting with the Secretary of State for Public Administration, Marisa Garrido, at the Ministry of Finance, in Lisbon, noting that at issue is the proposal for an increase of 10 cents per year “to reach 6.30 euros in 2029”.
The last time the meal allowance for Public Administration workers was increased was in 2023 under the Government of António Costa, having risen to six euros.
The meal allowance paid by card exempt from IRS and Social Security contributions rose from 9.60 euros in 2024 to 10.20 euros in 2025this being a measure that resulted from the tripartite Social Concertation agreement.
The National Federation of Unions of Workers in Public and Social Functions (Frente Comum) also indicated that this was the only “new thing” compared to the proposed addendum to the multi-year agreement currently in force and accused the Government of “continuing to put Public Administration workers in another year of losing their purchasing power”.
