Government will provide protection to lemon producers in Michoacán

The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) launch a strategy to reinforce security and protect lemon producers in Michoacán from extortion by organized crime, reported Omar García Harfuch, head of the agency.

After his appearance before the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of the Chamber of Deputies, he detailed that he will meet this Tuesday with Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and the head of the Sedena, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, to analyze the problems and progress in the investigation of the murder of Bernardo Bravo, leader of the lemon trees.

“On instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, I will be [hoy]your servant and the general secretary, General Trevilla, we are going to be in Michoacán tomorrow, with the governor and other people specifically, to look at the issue of lemon extortion; Several arrests have been made in this very unfortunate case that we all know, there is important progress, there have been arrests and we are going to continue with this,” he indicated.

Harfuch alluded to self-defense groups such as the so-called Purépecha Army of Michoacan Freedom, and said that there are several in different entities, without specifying a number, but each case must be analyzed to decide if it is possible for there to be cooperation, because some are linked to criminal groups.

“There are several groups formed, we would have to see exactly which groups, because there are several, I am not talking about in Michoacán, in various places, where we have all seen that a group is established as if it were a self-defense group, but it may also have certain links with organized crime, I am not talking specifically about the group to which it refers, each one would have to be reviewed,” he commented.

Likewise, he pointed out that reports of this type of crime are very important, because they give the Ministry of Security elements to act against and reduce cases of extortion: “Who is our main ally in reporting any crime is the citizens, which is precisely what we have been doing, when the trust of the citizens increases, when they report us, whether anonymously.”

“Either there are these types of tables, like the ones we have permanent in the states of the Republic, or like the President who invites the governors with greater impact to meetings with the security cabinet, because there is information, and when there is information there are results, tomorrow we will be in Michoacán,” he stressed.

Furthermore, Harfuch denied that he had suffered an attack, as journalist Raymundo Riva Palacio claimed in his column. However, he confirmed that there are many alerts: “I have not received attacks. There are too many alerts that are discarded, discarded and investigated permanently, and that is what we are always doing.”

“In that house what are you referring to, it is a very public house, I do not live there, it is an office that has a bedroom, because in the internal process we were all there, so we did not have any prior warning,” he assured.

Regarding the fight against extortion, Harfuch explained that with the strategy of reporting to number 089, more than 59 thousand calls have been received and 74% of the attempts have been frustrated, since the telephone companies have helped block those numbers.

“A crime like extortion, as well as kidnapping, what requires is the accompaniment of the victim, and that is what 089 does, taking the victim in accompaniment, where we have managed to immediately cut off communication, and this results in, More than 59 thousand calls have been received and 74% of extortion attempts were frustrated thanks to the real support of the operators“, said.

Harfuch also added that as of September 30, local federal governments had arrested more than 400 people for extortion.: “Another thing we need to solve any crime, but in this case extortion, is to find out, is that the complaints increase, and in these three months, since the President instructed the national extortion strategy, the complaints, calls have increased, and that is a reflection of the growing confidence of the population.”

Finally, Harfuch highlighted the initiative proposed by the Executive to issue the General Law against Extortion, which proposes ex officio investigation of extortion crimes, which would protect the victims. “They are going to prosecute ex officio and this is very important, we have all heard that a victim does not want to report because they do not want to give their name, with this new law they are going to persecute ex officio,” he explained.
