Many filmgoers remember Graham Greene for his breakout role playing Kicking Bird in the Kevin Costner epic, Dances With Wolves. He was nominated for an Academy Award for the role.

However, Greene also had an extensive filmography that included other well-known films as The Green Mile and Wind River. He also appeared on television as well, in popular series like Tulsa King and The Last of Us.

Hollywood lost a prolific and beloved actor – and a pioneer for indigenous representations on screen, when his manager announced on Sept. 1 that Greene has died at the age of 73. According to CBC, which confirmed his death with his manager, Greene was an Oneida actor who belonged to the Six Nations of Grand River in Ontario.

He died in Stratford, Ontario, on Sept. 1, CBC confirmed. “It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of award-winning legendary Canadian actor Graham Greene,” Gerry Jordan, his manager, told the Canadian network.

How did Greene die? His cause of death stemmed from a “long illness,” Variety reported, without defining it.

According to Variety, Greene was a “a pioneer for Indigenous actors in Hollywood.”

His manager told CBC that he died of “natural causes.”

According to the New York Post, Graham’s wife, Hilary Blackmore, was at his side when he died in a Toronto hospital. His representative told the Post that Graham was “finally free.”

Graham was also survived by his daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene and grandson Tarlo. People reported.

Fellow actors remembered Greene in tributes.

“Heartbroken,” wrote Lou Diamond Phillips, in a statement on X. “Terribly saddened to hear of the passing of Graham Greene at only 73. From Wolf Lake to Longmire, we had a beautiful friendship. An Actor’s Actor. One of the wittiest, wiliest, warmest people I’ve ever known. Iconic and Legendary. RIP, My Brother.”

Many people remembered him for the Kicking Bird role. Fans also offered tributes, with one writing on X, “Graham Greene was a titan and such a wonderfully empathetic force of nature on screen. I can’t think of any other actor who was so present throughout my life, at home and at the theater. What a loss for Canadian cinema.”
