In a remarkable move, the municipalities of Flims, Laax and Falera in the canton of Graubünden have taken control of the White Arena ski areas. This decision was made to preserve local tradition and keep foreign investors away. The residents of Flims were particularly determined and approved the purchase with an impressive majority of 85 percent.
The investment of 94.5 million francs, the equivalent of around 102 million euros, includes the takeover of 30 lifts, 20 restaurants, ski schools, hotels and bars. This infrastructure will now be transferred to municipal hands. The White Arena Group, the previous operator, will continue to manage the facilities and act as a tenant in order to continue normal operations.
With over 200 kilometers of slopes that primarily attract freestyle enthusiasts, the areas are known for their exceptional winter sports experience. Despite this takeover, prices for ski passes have remained relatively constant; Depending on the season, these are around 90 francs per day.
The move by the three municipalities follows a recent development in which the famous ski resorts of Crans-Montana and Andermatt-Sedrun were taken over by the US company Vail Resorts. This international expansion strategy caused concern in many places and has now led to decisive action in Graubünden.
