Grimes has revealed ‘no-one noticed’ her new face tattoo that has left many doing a double take.
The Canadian singer – real name Claire Elise Boucher – rose to fame in 2012 with her album Visions.
In the years since she’s also become known for her relationship with Elon Musk – with whom she shares three of his 14 children.
The pair have drawn plenty of attention for the unusual names they’ve given their children – X AE A-XII, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Techno Mechanicus.
However, this week Grimes, 37, also left many people confused with another move.
Posting a selfie on Instagram, she debuted her new face ink.
‘Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol,’ she explained.
‘That said I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats- there’s a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo.
‘Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that’s sort of underappreciated atm.’
The photo showed Grimes wearing a large pair of black glasses. Her tattoo was barely visible, but a red line could be seen circling her left eye.
The tattoo was done by a cybersigilism tattoo artist known as Glyphomancer. Cybersigilism is a style of tattooing that mixes ‘ancient symbolism with futuristic aesthetics’.
In the music video for her new song Artificial Angels, released last week, the tattoo can also be seen.
She added on X: ‘Idky this face tattoo is imperceptible but just for the record it’s my fave tat.’
However, her design choice divided people.
‘What is the face tat? The scar looking thing near one eye?’ Niki commented on Instagram.
‘Is the tattoo in the room with us?’ Kara joked.
‘I remember my first Ringworm..’ eyerefused quipped.
‘You tattooed ringworm on your face?’ Ari added.
A few years ago, the singer previously expressed her enthusiasm to get a face tattoo.
In 2022 she posted on Instagram and asked her followers for their thoughts on whether she should follow through with her plans.
‘I am very seriously considering getting a white ink tattoo on my face next week. Any thoughts?,’ she wrote alongside a selfie.
The same year she also shared a list of body modifications she wanted to make, which included vampire teeth and elf ears.
‘These next few years will be spent doing [all] my dream body mods,’ she explained.
In 2023 Grimes also debuted two ‘masterpiece’ tattoos running up each of her legs. One was done in red ink and featured a pattern, while the other featured large black strokes.
In recent years the singer has also spoken about her relationship with Elon, 54.
They were on and off for several years, with the singer previously saying they were ‘fluid’.
However, they are since believed to have been fully separated since 2023.
In March, she shared her ‘grave concern’ for her children in a desperate plea to her ex to keep her three children off the internet after he brought their four-year-old son to a media briefing at the White House.
‘I have tried begging the public and my kids’ dad to keep them offline, and I’ve tried legal recourse,’ she wrote via X.
She added: ‘I would hope there was some law that would allow a parent to veto small children from living public lives, but I don’t even trust the law to help me now if I tried to invoke it tbh.’
