Gustavo Madero, wealthy man who processed a welfare pension

In his last year as a legislator, the former senator received an annual net income of one million 218 thousand 873 pesos; Even so, he has already received his Welfare Pension for older adults, for which he has been widely criticized.

Mexico City, October 24 (However).- The former senator Gustavo Madero Muñoz It is not any figure or political of Chihuahua. A politician born and trained in National Action Party (PAN), institution in which he was active for decades, was national leader and for which he sought -without success- candidacy a Governor of Chihuahua. But also, Log belongs to one of the wealthiest families in the state and comes from a historical lineage: He is the grandnephew of former revolutionary president Francisco I. Madero.

However, today, Madero Muñoz -who continues in the opposition, although he is no longer actively involved in the PANbut has approached the ranks of the National Civic Fronta group seeking to reorganize and form a party- is located in the center of the controversy for one photograph. This is an image that circulated in social networks of Chihuahua where the former senator appears holding the card of the Welfare Pension to older adultsa social program promoted by the current federal government.

The photograph sparked controversy not only because of Madero’s profile, but precisely because of the rejection of government support that the opposition, with which he identifies, has long maintained as part of its political agenda.

But also, one of the main reasons that generates the current controversy is that their economic situation is very distant from that of the target population of this aid.

Although the pension for older adults is a universal right guaranteed by Law, one of the elements that contributed to inflaming the annoyance was Madero’s own standard of living. According to his latest asset declaration, consulted by HoweverIn his last year as a legislator, the former senator received an annual net income of one million 218 thousand 873 pesos.

In the same statement he reported that, through his dependents, he owns a 220 square meter apartment in Mexico City with a value of 10 million 647 thousand 700 pesos; an Audi Sport vehicle with a value of 360 thousand pesos; and various works of art valued together at 394,240 pesos.

Among the registered pieces, the following stand out: a painting by Francisco Zúñiga, without title, signed and dated 1968, in charcoal and conté on paper, valued at 123,200 pesos; a painting by Benjamín Domínguez titled crowned nunoil on canvas, with the same value of 123 thousand 200 pesos; a painting by Luis Nishizawa titled Juchitepec Valleymade in saiboku ink on paper, valued at 147,840 pesos.

Without a doubt, these assets contrast with the social meaning of the Welfare Pension, created to guarantee a basic income to older adults who face precarious economic conditions. Hence, Madero’s photo, although not illegal, but immoral, opens a broad debate about the coherence and political ethics of conservatives who criticize social programs, but do not hesitate to benefit from them.

During the morning conference this Friday, President Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned about the case, to which Sheinbaum reiterated his criticism of the opposition, saying that there is a lot of hypocrisy on the part of the adversaries of conservatism.

“No, I didn’t see the photograph, but there is a lot of hypocrisy in many of the adversaries of conservatism. They criticize the pension, they say that those who receive it and then go and train to receive it are a bunch of lazy people. So, there is a lot of contradiction,” said the president.

And the Madero episode is not an isolated event. In November of last year, former presidential candidate Gabriel Quadri was also criticized after being seen registering to receive the same Welfare Pension, despite the fact that months before he had harshly disqualified these programs, as he did on his X account, on October 21, 2024.

Quadri wrote that pensions for seniors were “unsustainable” due to the aging population, and noted that non-contributory ones could not be sustained in the long term. But, despite that speech, he was photographed carrying out the procedure to obtain the federal benefit.
