The Simpsons has “killed off” one of the main characters in the season 36 finale, and everyone is freaking out.
Marge Simpson, the famous blue-haired matriarch, dies at the end of the episode. Thankfully, it’s just a flash forward and she will be back in the next season, but they still confirmed the character will eventually die.
The episode, brilliantly titled “Estranger Things,” aired on Fox last month and focuses on the sibling relationship between Bart and Lisa, who used to bond over the TV show Itchy & Scratchy but have now drifted apart.
Marge is worried about how close they will be when they are older, and the show then flashes forward 35 years into the future, when Lisa has a brilliant career and Bart is running an unlicensed retirement home.
The siblings devastatingly mention their “late mother,” revealing that Marge has died. Homer is still alive and has been shipped off to a care programme in Florida, and Mr Skinner is somehow still going strong too.

In the episode, Lisa finds a letter from Marge that says it is supposed to be “opened after I pass” in the unlikely event that Homer outlives her. Inside, she asks the family to stay close.
The kids go and break their dad out of the Florida scheme and reunite to watch an episode of Itchy & Scratchy. Then, Marge looks down from the sky before walking into heaven with The Beatles’ Ringo Starr.
People are outraged that they killed her off on X, with one person writing: “What the f**k do you mean “Marge’s death” huh? You b**tards killed MARGE?”
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY KILLED MARGE SIMPSON?” said another.
It doesn’t mention when or how Marge dies, but it’s going to happen at some point in the future. The Simpsons is returning for season 37 later in 2025 and Marge will be back… for now.
