Thomas Harris’ novels brought to life one of entertainment’s most heinous cannibal serial killers. Anthony Hopkins’ role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs became a cult classic representation of the character, with Jodie Foster accompanying his performance as FBI agent Clarice Starling.
In 2013, NBC released the TV series Hannibal, based on the same novels and characters. Mads Mikkelsen took over the role of Dr. Lecter, with the series instead focusing on his relationship with book character Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). The series ran for three seasons, with fans always wanting a revival.
Hannibal series creator Bryan Fuller reveals his dream project would bring back Mikkelsen in his leading role, but this time introduce Clarice. With so many actors to choose from, Fuller has only one person in mind to play Clarice.
“My dream project is to do a limited series of Silence of the Lambs with Mads and Zendaya as Clarice Starling. If I could put anything out into the universe, I would put that into the universe,” revealed Fuller in an interview with ScreenRant while promoting his latest movie, Dust Bunny.
Zendaya as Clarice in a reboot series wouldn’t be a bad idea, as the actor has proved her ability to tap into various emotions with Challengers and Dune. A Hannibal reboot would be the first time she would tackle the crime thriller genre.
The reboot would have to address its timeline, as the end of the NBC series led fans to believe that both Will and Lecter faced their untimely demise. With Zendaya as Clarice, it’s likely the storyline would revolve around the time Lecter was imprisoned in Season 2 of the series, to echo the same predicament that takes place in the book and movie.
Mikkelsen hasn’t been shy about his deep desire to return to Hannibal, as well as the rest of the cast. For now, there’s no concrete update on a continuation.
