China faces the challenge of increasing its military strength by integrating civilian technologies. A researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Gu Jianyi, has suggested that China could learn from the US on how to effectively integrate civilian innovations into the defense industry. Gu emphasizes that successful US companies such as SpaceX, Palantir and Anduril could serve as role models to create a new industrial ecosystem characterized by Silicon Valley-like innovation, software-centric design and agile development.

Gu, who also works as an advisor to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Academy of Military Sciences, sees great potential in Chinese companies such as Huawei, DeepSeek and Tencent. These companies already have core technologies that could be integrated into the defense industry. If the technological reserves and innovation potential of these companies were fully exploited and systematically channeled into the development and production of weapons and equipment, it could provide a revolutionary impetus for China’s equipment development.

Military-civilian fusion has been a strategic policy in China for several years. However, according to Gu, there are still institutional barriers that need to be broken down to allow private and commercial companies to participate in national defense. These barriers currently prevent the full potential of civilian technologies from being used for military purposes. Reducing these barriers could significantly increase the innovative strength of the Chinese defense industry.

Integrating civilian technologies with military equipment could not only increase the efficiency and effectiveness of China’s armed forces, but also reduce dependence on foreign technologies. This is particularly important at a time when geopolitical tensions are rising and technological independence is critical to national security. Creating an innovative industrial ecosystem could help China consolidate its military strength and strengthen its position on the global stage.
