The debate surrounding the development of super-intelligent AI systems has reached a new dimension after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, joined leading AI experts and Nobel Prize winners to call for a ban on such technologies. This demand aims to stop the development of AI systems that would be able to outperform human intelligence in all cognitive tasks.
Signatories of the statement include prominent figures such as Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Steve Wozniak and Richard Branson. They all warn of the potential dangers that such technology could pose, including job losses, restrictions on civil liberties and even the risk of human extinction.
The statement was organized by the Future of Life Institute (FLI), a US organization that advocates for the safety of AI. FLI had already called for a pause in the development of powerful AI systems in 2023 after ChatGPT caused a stir worldwide. The organization argues that the development of superintelligence in the coming decades is realistic and entails significant risks.
However, some experts see the discussion about superintelligence as more of a strategic positioning by technology companies that are investing billions in AI development than an actual technical breakthrough. Still, an FLI survey shows that about three-quarters of Americans want strict regulation of advanced AI, with six in ten saying superintelligent AI should not be developed until it is deemed safe and controllable.
