HBO Max subscribers are in for an unwelcome surprise as the streaming giant announces a price hike. The increase affects both new and existing users, marking the platform’s latest effort to offset rising production and content costs.
The new price increase will affect ad-supported and ad-free plans, according to Deadline.
The Basic with Ads plan is increasing by $1 per month, bringing the new price to $10.99. Meanwhile, the Standard plan will rise by $1.50 to $18.49, and the Premium tier will jump by $2, reaching $22.99.
Anyone joining HBO Max as a new subscriber will be charged the new prices immediately, while existing subscribers have some time.
The streamer will give existing monthly subscribers a 30-day notice before their scheduled renewal date. If staying with HBO Max, they can expect the new prices in their next billing cycle or on November 20.
HBO Max is the latest streamer to increase its prices, as Netflix raised its standard-ad-free and premium subscriptions earlier with year. Apple TV+ raised its prices by 30%, with Hulu hiking prices for its Live TV to $89.99 a month. Disney+ was also announced to increase multiple tiers and bundles by $2 to $3 a month.
In 2022, WarnerMedia merged with Discovery Inc., leading HBO Max to be rebranded as Max in 2023. It integrated Disney+ programming like reality, lifestyle, and documentary content.
Warner Bros. Discovery is currently undergoing major changes, as multiple parties, even Netflix, have shown their interest in acquiring parts or all of the company. After refusing Paramount’s initial bid, WBD announced it will split the company into two this following spring.
