Heat index soars, coaches prioritize player hydration

MARTINEZ, Ga. (WJBF)- High temperatures continue to keep soaring and coaches are preparing their players for extremely hot days.

The head football coach for Augusta Prep is telling his players to hydrate.

The teams first week of pads comes during one of the hottest days as the heat index reaches the hundreds.

The chances for heat illnesses increase for players.

But the coaches are following guidelines making sure to give players enough water breaks.

“We follow the GIA guidelines. So right now with the heat out as it’s every 20 minutes, we’ve got to have a five minute water break where they can get a full rest and we’ve got cold towels over there that they can try and cool off a little bit,” said Augusta Preps head football coach, Phelps Hunnicutt.

He’s also made sure the players continue to stay accountable after practice.

“Big part of our program is trying to get them to be intentional and accountable for what they need to do outside of practice. When it comes to getting ready for the heat. Encouraging them to do the extra little bit in the afternoon. So when we move to those 4 o’clock practices they’re ready for them.”

Coach believes his players still have some time to go before they are fully adapted to the heat in pads.
