Helicopter ‘spirals to the ground’ and crashes with ‘four people on board’ on the Isle of Wight

One person has been airlifted to hospital after a helicopter crashed in a field on the Isle of Wight this Bank Holiday Monday.

Multiple ambulances have been deployed to the scene after the incident near Shanklin Road just before 9.30am.

A police drone is also up, scouring the crash site, but at this stage it is still unclear if anyone has been injured and the exact nature of the incident.

Shanklin Road is currently closed and the police have urged residents to avoid the area.

Witness Leigh Goldsmith told the Isle of Wight County Press she was driving towards Shanklin when she saw the helicopter ‘spiralling’ before it went out of sight and came down in a hedge.

She said she was the first on the scene and saw there were four people on board, and she believed the airbags had been activated.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 9.24am to a report that a helicopter had come down in a field near the A3020 Shanklin Road.

‘The road is closed due to the number of emergency services vehicles at the scene, so please avoid the area at this time.’

Meanwhile, a Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance spokesperson confirmed that an air ambulance has also been dispatched.

They added: ‘The critical care team consisting of a doctor and a specialist paramedic are on scene working alongside our emergency service colleagues.’

Both the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent are on the scene.
