HELPFUL | How to avoid the traffic nightmare at Cape Town Stadium

With tens of thousands of rugby fans set to descend on the Cape Town Stadium for Saturday’s much-anticipated Springboks versus Wallabies Test, the City of Cape Town is urging attendees to ditch their cars and take advantage of public transport options to ease traffic congestion and reduce parking stress in the area.

To accommodate the match-day rush, special Metrorail services will operate before and after the game, offering return tickets for around R20.

These trains will connect key suburban areas to Cape Town Station, ensuring a convenient and affordable route into the city.

From the station, fans can hop onto free MyCiTi shuttle buses – reserved exclusively for match ticket holders – that will run from around midday into the evening, transporting spectators directly to the Cape Town Stadium and back.

Plan Ahead for a Smoother Experience

City officials are urging fans to:

  • Check train and shuttle schedules in advance via official PRASA and MyCiTi platforms
  • Allow extra time for station entry, exit, and travel, especially during peak arrival times
  • Arrive early to avoid last-minute delays amid expected large crowds
  • Carry valid match tickets, which are required to access the free shuttle service

“Using public transport not only helps ease congestion but supports a safer and greener match day experience,” said a city spokesperson.

“It also means fans can arrive at the stadium relaxed and ready to cheer on the Boks.”

Road closures

With all roads leading to the Cape Town Stadium this Saturday, a number of road closures and restrictions in the Green Point Precinct and Granger Bay will be in effect:

The free MyCiTi shuttle will be operating from 11:30 to 21:30 to and from the following locations:

  • Bellville Velodrome
  • Century City
  • The CTICC
  • Thibault Square
  • The Civic Centre

Park & Ride facilities

The City will avail its parking lot at the Civic Centre (entry is via Hertzog Boulevard (incoming) and Civic Road) to match ticket holders from 11:30 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spectators who park at the Civic Centre can then take the MyCiTi bus from the Civic Centre station.

Fans can also take a bus from the Century City Steelbridge e-Parking, off Century Boulevard, from 11:30.

Limited free parking bays are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The area will be monitored by security; however, parking is at the owner’s risk.

Paid parking is also available at the mall.

In Bellville, parking at the Bellville Velodrome will be available for spectators, where buses will be available from 11:30 until 21:30.

At the CTICC, the shuttle will operate from the City Sightseeing bus stop near Entrance 3 on Walter Sisulu Avenue, with free on-street parking in the CBD from 13:00.

Paid parking is also available at the Parkalot on Jack Craig Street and at the Harbour Arch on Harbour Arch Boulevard.

Metrorail service

Metrorail will be running additional trains to Cape Town Station on all its operating lines. Trains will operate between 11:00 and 22:00 at a cost of R20 for a return ticket.

Spectators can then hop on a free MyCiTi at the Civic Centre and Thibault Square or take the FanWalk to the Green Point Precinct.

A designated e-hailing drop-off and pick-up area will be located at P13 on Green Point Main Road, between York Road and Wigtown Road.

Stadium gates are set to open at midday. Kick-off is at 17:10.

Good luck!
