Henry Cavill’s Training Injury Causes Major Delay on Highly Anticipated Reboot

In the world of Highlander, there can be only one. And that one—star Henry Cavill—needs some time off.

Deadline is reporting that the former Superman has sustained an injury during training for the highly anticipated action-fantasy reboot. While details on the nature of the injury have not been shared, it’s apparently serious enough that production on the film, which was scheduled to kick off this month in Scotland, has been put on hold. According to Deadline, the film likely won’t begin shooting until early 2026.

The original Highlander—a time-jumping action-fantasy film in which immortal warriors battle each other over several centuries—starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. It was a flop when it was released in theaters in 1986, but gained a massive cult following that turned it into a franchise. Several sequels followed the original film, and in 1992 it was turned into a hit TV series starring Adrian Paul.

Talk of a reboot first began in 2008, with several big-name actors—including James McAvoy, Robert Pattinson, Kit Harington, and Charlie Hunnam—being mentioned as possible leads. In 2012, Ryan Reynolds was announced as the new star, but he dropped out the following year.

Finally, in 2021, it was confirmed that the reboot was finally happening with Cavill as its star and John Wick’s Chad Stahelski in the director’s chair. Cavill is joined by an all-star cast that includes Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Djimon Hounsou.

Both Cavill and fans are already counting down the days until the new Highlander emerges. In April 2024, Cavill dropped by CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where he teased some details about the film, promising audiences, “If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”
