Another year, another wave of students with a sparkle in their eye and a pep in their step, fresh out of sixth form.
For most of you, exams will be ending, which means you can get started on your summer of uni preparation.
Surviving university might seem daunting and there’s often a lot to do before you step on campus, but the first obstacle to clear is almost always student accommodation.
However, if you’re heading to the University of Glasgow, then we’ve rounded up the six most popular student halls for you to choose from.
1. Wolfson Hall
My first year accommodation and perhaps the most quintessentially “fresher accom”, the catered Wolfson Hall.
First off, I have to admit, it’s a trek from here to campus. A 40 minute bus ride to be exact.
However, if you are able to, walking and biking are good options for the commute because the views are SO worth it.
This part of Maryhill is also isolated but there is the big Tesco 15 min away, and a McDonalds right opposite.
As mentioned previously, these halls are catered so expect two meals a day, but vegetarian options are a tad lacking, in my opinion.
Rooms are spacious and clean. Keep in mind, though, your experience might differ greatly depending on whether you share a bathroom. I was allotted a non-ensuite during the room crunch of 2022, so I enjoyed my time here way less than my ensuite-dwelling friends did.
Socialising is easy but not too wild. I’d say there aren’t enough laundry machines but the little library will always have my heart.
Also, there are shared kitchens between six flatmates in case you ever need to whip up a quick snack. Very basic but functional so can’t complain.
P.S. Be on the lookout for animals at night, if you’re lucky you might just spot a fox or two here.
2. Kelvinhaugh Gate

via Google Maps
Next on our list is Kelvinhaugh Gate, located a mere 15 min walk from uni, in Finnieston.
Finnieston is a very popular student area, brimming with nightlife, so rejoice if partying is your thing.
Kelvingrove Park is also well within reach, so ideal for relaxing in during the summer months.
Furthermore, the accommodation is very close to Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Lidl, and this area is relatively safe too.
As for the interior, Kelvinhaugh Gate has also been recently renovated and has both three and five person flats, all ensuites.
Rooms are comfy and well-equipped but there are a lack of common areas.
All in all, great accommodation if you prefer light socialising as opposed to hardcore partying.
3. Murano Street Student Village

via Google Maps
This one is by far the most polarising (and populated) on this list.
Known famously as the “party halls”, Murano is strongly favoured by those that are fond of socialising. So, if you are someone that is easily distracted by the constant hullabaloo, these halls are probably not for you.
Located one mile from uni, Murano is a bit further out than Finnieston, but the commute isn’t nearly as bad as it is for Wolfson Hall.
While you can choose between flats of four to five and 10 to 12, bathrooms and toilets are shared, but as with the other non-ensuite accoms you do get a sink to yourself.
4. Queen Margaret Residences

via Google Maps
Murano’s more expensive twin. Located about a mile from uni, this accom has five person flats on offer with ensuites and a shared dining area.
Unsurprisingly, this is one of the most popular halls at the University of Glasgow due to its aesthetic and facilities.
Rooms are spacious and clean, common spaces are also proportional to the number of occupants.
There’s also a number of bus stops around, so the commute to uni isn’t too bad.
The central building common rooms are also shared with the Winton Drive accommodation, so that could make socialising a bit of a hassle during peak hours.
As for the environment, Queen Margaret is the perfect balance of privacy and partying.
5. Cairncross House
Also located 15 minutes from campus, you can pick from single, twin and large single study bedrooms at this accommodation.
Like its neighbours Kelvinhaugh Street and KHG, Cairncross is nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of Finnieston, a safe, vibrant location with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.
Although there is always a party here at any given hour, it is much more relaxed than Murano.
Kitchens, like in many other halls on this list, are smaller and less private, and bathrooms are shared, but as usual, you do get a sink.
Also, you can choose to bunk up with your bestie and opt for a shared room (they are single sex though).
6. Firhill Court

via Google Maps
Last on our list of Glasgow University’s most popular student halls is Firhill Court, located in Maryhill, about a 20 min walk from uni.
This halls of residence has well equipped and spacious rooms with ensuite bathrooms.
Kitchens are shared between six people and are a little cramped. Also, if you’re bringing a car with you, remember these halls are near a football stadium so traffic will be a pain during match days.
Social life is somewhat okay, but not nearly as great as some of the other accoms on this list.
