Netflix has blessed us with a new rom-com called Too Much. The show follows the romance of an American called Jessica and a British guy called Felix. The cast of Netflix’s Too Much have revealed their show was inspired by the true story of the show’s creator, Lena Dunham and Luis Felber.
Will Sharpe explained to Tudum: “It’s loosely based on Lena and Luis’s personal story. But it’s been reimagined through these characters of Jess and Felix. It’s about getting over your past to accept new possibilities in love.”
Lena Dunham created the show alongside her husband Luis Felber.
In Too Much, Jessica goes through a nasty break-up in New York. She moves to London and falls in love with a musician.
For context, in real life, Lena Dunham used to live in New York with Jack Antonoff. Taylor Swift has said her song You Are in Love was about them. Then Lena Dunham moved to the UK and met the musician Luis Felber. They got married in London in 2021.
Lena Dunham told Vanity Fair that Too Much is “about 5 per cent autobiographical.”
She insisted her character Jessica’s ex, Zev, isn’t specifically based on any one person. “That ex-boyfriend is very much an amalgamation of every ex that I’ve had, or that a friend’s had. It’s this quotidian acceptance of unkindness that eats away at a person over a long period of time and degrades their sense of self. If someone were to say, ‘Who inspired that character?’ I’d be like, ‘Do you have time for me to give you 42 examples?’”
Some viewers have spotted a few parallels between what Lena has previously said about her relationship with Jack, and some moments on Too Much. For instance, in Too Much, Jessica and her ex struggle to look after a dog called Cutesie, and they end up rehoming him. In real life, Lena and Jack gave up a dog called Lamby because of “challenging behaviour and aggression.” In the show, Jessica and Zev argue about how to decorate their home. Lena Dunham spoke to the press about a similar incident with Jack.
