Here’s Why a Longtime Favorite Soft Drink Is Being Recalled

When customers head to the soda aisle at their local grocery store, they’re often treated with conditions and a long list of options. Sometimes, customers know what they’re looking for as they rely on old favorites. Other times will see options cycled out as the more popular options take priority.

One soft drink brand with millions of fans around the world appears to have the right strategy, but a recent recall could also create its own set of problems for the long-standing favorite.

Recalls have been significant throughout several time period, and this newest warning to consumers may force them to think twice in the soft drink aisle.

Why Was The Drink Recalled?

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has announced a recall for select cans of 7-Up Zero Sugar soda. The cans may potentially contain full-sugar 7Up instead of the unsweetened version, and nearly 2,000 cases of product have been recalled due to the error.

The FDA made the recall a Class II event, which suggests that the error “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

The cases are the 12-pack of 7-Up Zero Sugar in a cardboard case, and they’ll be labeled as  “7Up Tropical Flavored Soda.” The cans will feature a UPC of 078000037975, and the cardboard container box’s UPC will be 078000037982.

Lot numbers for the recalled soda items end with XXXXBR062156 or XXXXBR062256, and the affected products have a “use-by” date of March 23, 2026. The recalled cases were distributed across three states: Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

Next Steps After Recall

Buffalo Rock Co., one of Pepsi-Co’s largest bottlers, issued the 7-Up recall in late July. It’s unclear if the soda is still on store shelves, but it’s likely been phased out with new shipments of product reaching stores.

The FDA advises those who are monitoring their sugar intake to throw the soda away, or to return to the store they purchased it from for a full refund.

Those who aren’t watching how much sugar they consume aren’t advised to take action, and can enjoy the full-sugar version of the soda without concern. Still, if they would prefer, those customers are also afforded the option of returning the cases to the store for a full refund or exchange.

7-Up has been one of America’s favorite sodas for decades, and the zero sugar option is popular for those who are looking for a healthier option due to dietary or health reasons. We’ll see if the recall results in a massive amount of exchanges at grocery stores in the affected states.
