Erika Kirk has spoken openly about the moment she found out about her husband, Charlie Kirk’s, murder, sharing the shock and heartbreak she experienced.
Charlie Kirk was a conservative activist and the founder of Turning Point USA. He was at an outdoor college event when he was tragically shot at Utah Valley University. He later died in the hospital. A suspect, Tyler Robinson, is in custody and has been charged with seven offences.
Erika Kirk, Charlie’s wife, has previously posted photos and videos of him, remembering the life they shared together. Recently, it was announced that Erika will take over as CEO of Turning Point USA, continuing the organisation that Charlie founded in 2012.
‘This is exactly what he last saw’
Now, speaking to The New York Times in her first interview since her husband’s death, Erika opened up about the moment she learned her husband had been shot. She said she received a frantic phone call from Charlie’s assistant, Michael McCoy. “He screamed, ‘He’s been shot!’” she recalled.
Immediately, Erika tried to rush to her husband’s side. She booked a flight and was on her way when she was told that Charlie had already passed away. “I’m looking at the clouds and the mountains,” she said. “It was such a gorgeous day, and I was thinking: This is exactly what he last saw.”
When she arrived at the hospital, a sheriff advised her not to see his body because of the injuries. Erika insisted, saying, “With all due respect, I want to see what they did to my husband.” She described seeing him with his eyes semi-open and a “Mona Lisa-like half-smile.” “It was like he died happy, like Jesus rescued him,” she said.
Erika also opened up about the final moments she shared with her late husband and how he was “always excited” about the college events.
She had planned to travel with Charlie for his American Comeback Tour stop in Utah but stayed behind to care for her mother.
