High Loss in the 3rd Quarter due to Charge 777X

Boeing announced this Wednesday, 29, a net loss of 5,340 million dollars (4,590 million euros) in the third quarter, worse than expected by the markets due to charges for the 777X aircraft program, which was very delayed.

At issue is a loss of 4,900 million dollars (4,212 million euros) before taxes related to the 777X aircraft program, the first delivery of which was postponed to 2027 following several delays and setbacks in the project.

In the third quarter of 2024, the American aeronautical manufacturer had reported a net loss of 6,170 million.

With regard to turnover, it increased by 30% in the third quarter of this year, to 23,270 million dollars, benefiting from a recovery in production and deliveries after the crisis caused by a flight incident in January 2024 and by a long strike in two large factories in the autumn of that year.

In electronic trading before the opening of the New York Stock Exchange, Boeing shares were falling 1.02%.

The commercial aviation division (BCA) of the aeronautical construction company delivered 440 planes between July and September, that is, around a hundred more than in the third quarter of 2024, according to the group’s general director, Kelly Ortberg, in a message addressed to employees.

In the message, Ortberg also reported “strong demand”, with 774 orders in 2025, more than double the previous year.

In the quarter under review, Boeing once again recorded a positive cash flow of 1,120 million dollars (962 million euros), for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2023.

Per share and excluding extraordinary items – the market’s preferred indicator – the net loss was $7.47, which compares with a net loss of $10.44 a year earlier.

The consensus of analysts interviewed by AFP predicted a net loss of $5.16 per share.

This is not the first time that Boeing has been forced to take on a heavy burden with the 777X program, its new large plane with two jet engines.

In the third quarter of 2024, it recorded a pre-tax loss of 3,000 million dollars (2,577 million euros), partly attributed to this program, and a loss of 6,500 million (5,584 million euros) in the fourth quarter of 2020, fully attributed to this program.
