The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) flagged head of the Gauteng Health Department, Lesiba Malotana, as a “high risk” individual following a lifestyle audit conducted by the agency.
This was revealed by MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko – acting as Gauteng premier in place of Panyaza Lesufi – on Tuesday in response to a question from DA provincial spokesperson for health, Jack loom, during a legislature sitting.
This audit outcome by the SIU is the likely reason behind Lesufi suspending the Gauteng Health HOD last Tuesday, and appointing Dr Darion Barclay to act in the position.
Gauteng Health HOD Lesiba Malotana suspended
Malotana’s suspension came amid investigations into alleged criminal syndicates that siphoned R2 billion from the Tembisa Hospital.
Lesufi said the suspension demonstrated the provincial government’s commitment to root out maladministration and ensure accountability.
In a statement, Bloom said the SIU’s findings vindicated the party, which had opposed Malotana’s appointment in the first place.
“Lesufi should be condemned for his severe error of judgement in appointing Malotana,” Bloom said, adding that the party questioned the possible extent of the damage of his appointment.
Bloom said the party wanted Malotana to declare his personal wealth and disclose how he got it. Malotana has a lot to answer for, he said.
“What payoffs has he received in his long career in the department? Was he involved with the R2 billion siphoned off from the Tembisa Hospital, as well as other looting scandals?” said Bloom.
Bloom said Malotana should not be allowed to resign and leave with his pension if found guilty.
He said the party wanted him to face criminal charges should he be found on the wrong side of the law.
What Malotana is accused of
According to Bloom, the high-risk finding by the SIU stems from an investigation into Malotana around the alleged manipulation of tender processes in 2016 and 2017, to benefit in BAS Medxpress – a medical supply company.
The SIU investigation of Malotana relates to the alleged manipulation of tender processes in 2016 and 2017 in favour of a company called BAS Medxpress.
“It has been alleged that Malotana and two senior officials – Edgar Motha and Sheriff Lecholo – took bribes to the tune of R8 million,” Bloom told The South African.
