Just weeks ago, Paramount TV Studios team confirmed that Dexter: Original Sin would be getting a second season, much to the excitement of fans.

However, those hopes have now been dashed in one fell swoop, with the network backtracking on its word and cancelling the Dexter spin-off completely.

In April, an announcement with Showtime stated that the Dexter franchise would continue to expand, with the cast looking set to return to their roles for more bloodthirsty action.

But today, viewers have learned that the prequel series actually never even had production dates scheduled.

According to Variety, sources say the spin-off won’t be moving forward because it is on hiatus.

Taking to social media in response, fans expressed their rage, demanding that Original Sin be ‘brought back’.

Some have even started petitions, with one on Change.org acquiring almost 7,000 signatures within hours, the fan behind it declaring Original Sin a ‘cultural phenomenon’ worth saving.

‘Devastated is an understatement’, wrote @sistapam96 on X.

‘THEY LITERALLY CONFIRMED SEASON TWO NOT THAT LONG AGO WHAT THE HELL?????????’, vented @tornado_swirl.

‘I genuinely feel sick dude. I enjoyed the first season quite a bit. What a disappointment’, added @HawxBeam.

@LaurensRage echoed: ‘This was one of the best shows I’ve seen this year’.

Although, some aren’t surprised at the axe, insisting that the prequel was ‘not needed’ due to Dexter’s repeated use of flashbacks.

Dexter: Original Sin originally debuted in December 2024, and its first—and now only—season concluded in February.

Set in 1991, it followed the character of Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall) as he narrated and reflected on his youth, 15 years before the first season of Dexter, which ran from 2006 to 2013.

Essentially, it meant revisiting Dexter’s childhood and exploring what caused him to turn into an avenging serial killer, having committed his first murder at the age of 20.

He proceeds to aid and abet his dark urges by pursuing guidance from his father, who helps him to figure out a code that tells him who to ‘eliminate’ from society without being caught.

Avoiding prosecution while channelling his need to kill is tricky, though, as Dexter begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

While Patrick Gibson portrays a younger version of the protagonist, Hall provides the voice-over for the flashbacks.

Speaking previously to Metro, lead Gibson admitted he felt the pressure when taking over such an iconic, beloved role.

‘I felt that pressure when I saw the audition—not that I felt the pressure, because I didn’t have the role—but I was like, “This seems like something you really can’t screw up.”

‘I was aware of how much people love that character and also how unique of a character he is. It’s not like you’re doing another iteration of it; you really are playing the same guy. That was definitely daunting,’ he shared.

Other cast members include Christian Slater, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey served as guest stars.

As well as adding to the Dexter franchise with Original Sin, creators also made Dexter: Resurrection, which is a sequel set 10 weeks after the original finale concluded.

Currently still airing, it debuted on July 11 and its final episode is slated for September 5.

And fans do have hope for more Dexter action in some form, as it’s said Paramount is planning on opening a writers’ room for a potential season 2 of Resurrection ‘imminently’.

Of course, this is not guaranteed, as the fate of Original Sin has proven, but things are certainly looking promising, given the viewing figures.

According to reports, Resurrection’s premiere episode attracted 4.4million multiplatform viewers within the first week, and the series as a whole has a near-perfect score (94%) on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
