You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone with a negative thing to say about Robert Downey Jr. since the popular actor first debuted as Iron Man. Several notable stars have openly spoken about Downey’s willingness, and even eagerness, to help others, praising the 60-year-old actor for his generosity with his time.
While those are just a few of the bullet points from the many rave reviews given to Downey, fellow Marvel actor and star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu, recently gave an exceptionally glowing review of his castmate. Not surprisingly, Liu’s comments on Downey highlight the immense impact he’s had on him during their time working together.

Liu recently spoke with The River in an interview translated into English about working with the longtime Iron Man star, who’s set to take on the significant role of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Downey’s profound impact on Liu quickly became apparent, as the 36-year-old actor cited him as an inspiration on two occasions, as MCU Film News detailed.
“He really inspires me,” Liu said of Downey. “…He’s been an integral part of Marvel’s success and has been in so many films over the years, yet he still takes the time to meet and connect with so many people. He’s such a kind, generous, and inspiring person.”
Liu’s comments have shades of other praise Downey has received from castmates over the years, but it sounds as though the duo has built a strong bond during their time filming Avengers: Doomsday.

While Marvel has a longstanding code of silence, of sorts, for actors in their movies, Liu offered a bit of a tease about Downey’s new role as Doctor Doom. After spending roughly the last 17 years playing Iron Man, a role in which he debuted in 2008, it sounds like his move over to the dark side has been equally, if not more impressive, according to Liu.
In the same interview, Liu reportedly told The River that Downey Jr.’s performance as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday will blow everyone away, which MCU Film News also translated.

For anyone who’s seen Downey’s performances in the Iron Man franchise or Avengers, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Downey’s performance in his previous superhero role led to his character being front and center in the bulk of the four Avengers films he’s been in, dating back to 2012.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026, and while the film boasts a loaded roster of high-profile names and actors who previously played superheroes, virtually the entire cast has remained tight-lipped thus far during filming. In turn, very little is known about the highly anticipated movie, which will be followed almost exactly one year later by the next addition to the franchise, Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for release on Dec. 17, 2027.
