How Safe Are Budget Airlines? Experts Weigh In

Cutting costs on airline travel isn’t unheard of, especially when choosing an airline that offers lower prices for a flight compared to its competitors. But it leads to the question of whether saving a few bucks with budget airlines makes a difference in overall safety.

The answer? Not at all, according to a report by the HuffPost. Whether traveling abroad, across the U.S., or to a dream destination vacation, all airlines must follow FAA safety guidelines. Regardless of one flight being cheaper than another, you’re likely to be just as safe in a budget-friendly coach seat as you are in a first-class seat on an Emirates flight.

“In the majority of markets, low-fare air carriers are as safe as their full-fare competition,” said George Novak, president and CEO of the National Air Carrier Association and former FAA attorney.

“There are no exceptions for size, revenue or fare structure,” said Novak. He explains that all Part 121 airlines within the U.S., which are responsible for every commercial carrier operating large aircraft on scheduled routes, must follow and operate under the FAA rules.

He adds that even the smallest airlines in remote parts of the world aren’t free from following safety protocols. The International Civil Aviation Organization is responsbile for conducting countless detailed safety and security audits.

How are these airlines charging less and maintaining safety guidelines? Budget-friendly airlines enact cost-cutting measures that are purely cosmetic. Examples like adding more seats to a plane, cutting back on certain amenities, or planning routes that bypass expensive airline hubs.

While these cost cuts may affect departure time, boarding, or changes in staff that may rile up a few passengers wanting to get to their destination, it doesn’t change safety.

“Airlines have to follow regulatory requirements that cover everything from maintenance schedules and pilot training to safety checks. Airline regulators like the Federal Aviation Administration have strong powers that allow them to ground aircraft if they’re deemed unsafe for any reason,” explained Dean Van Es, CEO of Fast Cover Travel Insurance.

When looking to travel, choosing a cost-friendly airline isn’t a bad idea. Your wallet may thank you, and your safety isn’t compromised.
