Right guys, let’s call a spade a spade: The Sims 4 is quite a fun game – when it works. All these years later – literally a decade – and the game still crashes all the time or sometimes has bugs that make playing it so frustrating. You can be doing anything and suddenly there’s an issue with your Sim getting stuck, or a plate that won’t be washed, or a door that is meant to be locked to Sims outside the household and then suddenly Judith Ward is in there playing on the computer. And mind you, that townie is meant to be the biggest and most wealthy celeb in the game. So why’s she in my starter home on the PC? God only knows. However, there is a handy hack Sims 4 players can try to make their game run smoother and assist in easing any bugs.
It’s all about clearing your cache
Clearing your game’s cache sounds boring, but trust… it’s basically like giving The Sims a brain cleanse. It dumps all the random junk the game’s been hoarding (like mod data and 400 Gallery mansions you forgot you downloaded) so things can actually run smoothly again. It’s especially useful if you’re a mod addict or your worlds are stuffed with a billion Sims.
The Sims 4 cache files can completely fall apart if you’re using mods. Over time, as you lovingly update your custom content and keep your save limping along, the game’s cache just can’t keep up. It gets messy. It gets confused. It turns into a tangled digital hairball of outdated data that tanks your performance and makes your game run like it’s powered by a potato.
Luckily, clearing it is easier than cheating your way to §999,999 Simoleons. On PC or Mac, just go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Once you’re in, delete localthumbcache.package and avatarcache.package. That’s literally it. Two files. Gone. Your game breathes again. You? A tech god.
It might not fix everything but it’s certainly worth a try as a little hack to get The Sims 4 running smoother!
