How to track your travels via apps

Whether you’re a local or a tourist, you will never run out of fun things to do and see when travelling in South Africa, even if it’s just a day trip!

Keeping a record of your travels is the best way to cherish the memories you make, whether it’s a photo collage, a travel journal, or a combination of both.

While you can go with the traditional notebook to diarise your daily experiences on your trip, there are also a few apps you can make use of. And, you don’t have to share it on social media if that’s not your thing!

Apps to digitise your memories

Digitising means keeping a digital record of your travel memories that you can save for the rest of your life; it’s like keeping a travel journal.  And, digitising your memories doesn’t always mean posting on social media; keeping a record of travels on public posts or stories isn’t for everyone.

While the more romantic and somewhat old-fashioned way of putting pen to paper to record your day will never truly go out of fashion, in the tech-savvy age we’re in, it’s worthwhile to note a few ways to keep track of your travels online, which might be better if you’re tight on space in your luggage and don’t want to carry around extra items.

Day One Journal App

Available for Android and iOS, the recommended Day One Journal App is for keeping a daily journal. You can also maintain separate journals that are backed up on private servers and secured with a passcode. With its Map View feature, you can visualise your diary entries, seeing them on a map. Another fun feature includes book printing; you can make physical copies of your journal if you’d like to have keepsakes of your travels.

Diarium App

Keep a daily journal with photos and videos, and ‘Smart Integrations’ that include the weather, your calendar, sunrise and sunset, camera roll, and more! While the Diarium App can apply to almost any part of your life, it can be tailored to become your go-to travel journal for a longer trip or just a weekend away. It also includes a map view that allows you to keep a visual record of the places you’ve visited.

Polarsteps Travel App

Polarsteps allows you to plan and track your travels in real-time. It’s described as prioritising “honest storytelling over curated posts” and recently reached 15 million users all over the world. You can also order a Travel Book after your trip.

While many of these apps seem similar in what they offer, it’s worth a try to see which one works best for you and your purpose. You don’t have to be a seasoned traveller to use them. Starting with smaller day trips can be just as much fun.
