Ryan Coogler is having a very good day. On Thursday morning, the 39-year-old filmmaker—who was already a two-time Oscar nominee—set a new standard for awards season when Sinners, his vampire flick, logged a record 16 Oscar nominations.
In addition to three nominations for Coogler, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture, the Southern Gothic horror hit swept just about every category, including a Best Actor nod for Coogler’s longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan, who played a dual role as twin brothers, and a surprise first-ever nomination for the always-compelling Delroy Lindo.
What Is Sinners About?
Sinners, which is set in the early 1930s in the Mississippi Delta, sees twin brothers/Chicago mobsters Smoke and Stack Moore (both played by Jordan) return to their home in the Mississippi Delta in order to get a fresh start and open a juke joint. But malevolent forces—in this case, vampires as a physical form of racism—have other plans for the pair.
With its brilliant use of metaphor mixed with its period setting, lush visuals, standout music, and outright gore, Sinners is unlike any vampire movie that came before it, as evidenced by its record-breaking success at the box office.
How Can I Watch Sinners?
Sinners arrived in theaters on April 18, 2025, then came back for a special IMAX run during Halloween week. Given the beauty of its scope, it’s returning for another IMAX re-release this week, on Friday, January 23rd, for anyone who missed it on the big screen the first time around—or simply wants to relive it again.
If you prefer your movie nights on your very own couch, you’re in luck, as Sinners has been available to stream since June 2025.
The easiest way to watch it is with an HBO Max subscription. Sinners arrived on the platform on July 4, 2025, in both its theatrical format as well as a Black American Sign Language (BASL) version—making history as the first BASL movie available on streaming.
Sinners is also streaming on Prime Video.
No HBO Max or Prime subscription? No problem. The film is available to rent or buy on most major streaming networks, including Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango at Home.
