Hundreds of VW Amarok bakkies recalled over brake safety risk

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is recalling 374 Volkswagen Amarok vehicles following a safety alert from Volkswagen South Africa.

The recall affects Amarok units released between 10 January and 12 June 2025. According to VW, the defect lies in the electromechanical brake servo control unit, which may result in a loss of braking assistance.

Although the braking system remains functional, motorists will need to apply extra effort when stopping. This could lead to longer braking distances and increase the risk of accidents.

WHAT VW AMAROK OWNERS NEED TO KNOW

NCC Acting Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza, urged consumers to treat the recall as a matter of urgency.

“Consumers should take their vehicles to any approved Volkswagen dealership for an immediate inspection. The assessment and repairs will be done at no cost,” the he said.

The NCC stressed that recalls are essential under the Consumer Protection Act, ensuring defective products are removed from the market to safeguard consumers.

In August this year, the NCC issued a recall advisory on several vehicle models over issues classified as ‘voluntary, but urgent‘, due to the nature of the defects uncovered.

Volkswagen South Africa has assured customers that it will contact those affected directly.
