Hundreds pay tribute in paddle out for kite surfer Graham Howes

In a poignant tribute marked by ocean spray and solemn silence, dozens of kite surfers and community members gathered at Small Bay in Bloubergstrand last Sunday to honour the life of Graham Howes.

The moving paddle out ceremony, a traditional water-based memorial often used by surfers, saw friends and fellow ocean lovers form a circle in the water, casting flowers into the sea.

Failed to return

Graham Howes went missing on Sunday, 7 September, after setting out for a solo kite session from Eden on the Bay.

When he failed to return by late afternoon, his family raised the alarm.

His kite and board were located the following morning. Later that same day, a private yacht assisting in the search effort recovered his body offshore between Bloubergstrand and Dassen Island.

He was 38.

The search, led by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and supported by Metro Rescue, SAPS diving units, local fishermen, volunteers, and neighbourhood-watch groups, demonstrated the strength of community support in a moment of crisis.

“We commend the extensive efforts by all involved that helped bring closure for the family,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

“Family, friends, coast watchers and the local kite-boarding community assisted tirelessly with shoreline searches.”

“One Last Time, Where He Belonged”

At the tribute paddle out, emotions ran high as participants paid their respects in the most meaningful way – on the water.

“Graham wasn’t just an incredible kite surfer,” said fellow surfer James Ryland.

“He was the kind of person who lifted everyone around him. Today was about celebrating that energy.”

“Out here, on the water he loved, we felt connected to him one last time,” added Lindy Morris.

“It’s the way he would have wanted us to say goodbye.”

Photos captured during the event showed glowing sunset flames reflecting on the water as surfers clasped hands, dropped flowers, and shared memories.

“This is what makes our community special,” said kite surfer Kyle Slade.

“In times of heartbreak, we come together, just as we did when searching for him.”

Family Thanks Public, Asks for Privacy

In a brief statement, the Howes family expressed their deep gratitude for the outpouring of support and the coordinated rescue efforts but have asked for privacy during their time of mourning.

“The past week has been devastating, but we have been comforted by the incredible show of love and support from all corners of the country. Thank you for helping us bring Graham home.”
