It was with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Francisco Pinto Balsemão, one of the most notable Portuguese personalities of the last half century.
At this painful moment, I extend my feelings and sincere condolences to Mercedes and the children and grandchildren of Francisco Pinto Balsemão.
Few – even very few – have had such a relevant and lasting influence in Portugal and Portuguese society in recent decades.
Francisco Pinto Balsemão personified a vision and ambition for our country that he continued throughout a life of dedication and commitment, both in the public domain and Politics, and in the private sphere.
He was present in the transition to democracy and the affirmation of the Portuguese democratic regime.

He led the country’s destinies at the head of the Government; led the 1982 constitutional reform; boosted Portugal’s European integration; founded and led journalistic and information projects of the greatest relevance in our country; sought to praise the example and recognition of those who distinguished themselves through merit and talent.
It will not be possible to write the history of the last decades in Portugal without invoking Francisco Pinto Balsemão.
I am sure that his work and his legacy will endure.
