‘I played with Doctor at Chiefs before injury ended my dream’ – Bobby reveals

Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has revealed that he played for Amakhosi during his younger years, but an injury cut his career short.

The 55-year-old football administrator and entrepreneur has spent most of his life working for his father’s club, Kaizer Chiefs.

In an interview on the “Behind The Boot” podcast, Motaung discussed growing up in Soweto and balancing his passion for football with the family-run business.

Bobby played for the Kaizer Chiefs reserve side in the 80s

“Like I said, my life was unique. I grew up playing soccer. I was not a star; I was a normal player. I played as a winger but sometimes as a striker.

“Football is in my blood, that’s why I say I had a unique upbringing, mixed with business and business with football. But there came a time when I got injured, and I was young at the time. I was supposed to go for an operation, I decided to quit and focus on business,” he said.

Motaung mentioned that during his early days at Kaizer Chiefs, he played alongside the likes of Doctor Khumalo, who went on to become a club legend.

“I played for the Kaizer Chiefs reserve team under bra AB Matseng, the late Dick Khoza, bra Pro (Pro Khumalo). I played with Doctor there, but he was my senior at the time,” Bobby revealed.

Chiefs boss Bobby identified his love for business at an early age

“My passion growing up with business…we had businesses at home. My grandfather and uncle both owned businesses, so I worked in them on weekends.

“I also worked at the gates when Kaizer Chiefs were playing, I was selling tickets, ” Bobby added.
