Róisín Murphy’s concert at the Turkish Back In Town festival, which took place last weekend, was canceled after the Irish artist made a post considered transphobic on social media.
In X, Róisín published a graph that indicates that, between 2021 and 2024, there were fewer and fewer young people identifying as transgender or non-binary people in the United States. The artist suggested, based on this data, that gender fluidity “is not real”.
Róisín, who had previously made similar statements, was immediately criticized by some fans: “It is normal for people to refuse to openly declare themselves transgender when there are people in power who encourage hatred against those same people”, wrote one of them. The Irishwoman reacted by saying that it was not about hate, but about “dissonant voices”.
Following these publications, Róisín was replaced by the Turkish Kalben on the Back In Town poster. In a statement, the festival organizers stated that the event aims to be “a place of diversity, where everyone can feel safe”. “We believed that she represented this energy, but her recent statements ended with that feeling”, it can also be read. “We could not include her in the program while maintaining these values. We ask for the understanding of everyone whose hearts we broke.”
In response, Róisín referred to his detractors as “a bunch”. “The more I witness this cruel ‘activism’, the more I am convinced that I don’t want them anywhere near me or my music, even if it affects my career,” she said. “I will not be the target of blackmail. I’m not interested in being their ‘mother’ or ‘queen’; these babies have to grow up and allow artists like me the dignity of having an opinion, and the space and freedom to create. Or, let them have stars created with Artificial Intelligence, who never question them. I feel like I’ve lived through the last good times of popular music; this is the beginning of the end. If so, I have nothing to lose.”
Róisín also stated that he has “no hatred” towards transgender people: “When I wrote that ‘it was never real’, I was referring to the contagion fueled by the submission of the media and medical institutions. A blind and irresponsible behavior that has been softened as more and more people demand an audit of transgender ideology. There have been children, families, women, homosexuals affected by the crazy belief that someone can change their sex.” Sex reassignment surgery has existed since the beginning of the 20th century.
Remember that Róisín Murphy was one of the highlights of this year’s edition of the Meo Kalorama festival.
