The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed on Sunday that he recently spoke with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, who accuses Washington of using the fight against drug trafficking as a pretext to try to oust him from power.
“I wouldn’t say it went well or badly,” said Trump regarding the conversation with the Venezuelan leader, which was initially revealed by “The New York Times”. “It was a phone call”, the North American President only added.
In recent days, constant activity by North American fighters has been recorded just a few dozen kilometers off the Venezuelan coast, according to aircraft tracking websites.
The “New York Times” reported that Trump and Maduro had recently spoken on the phone about a possible meeting in the United States.
Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin said, in statements to CNN, that the United States offered Maduro the option of “going to Russia” or to another country.
“We gave Maduro the opportunity to leave,” said the Republican senator from Oklahoma.
“We told him he could go to Russia or another country,” he added.
