IEFP Records Decrease of 2.6% in September

The number of unemployed people registered in employment centers fell 2.6% in September year-on-year, but rose 0.3% compared to August, increasing in a chain for the second consecutive month, according to data released today by the IEFP.

According to the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), at the end of September, 302,600 unemployed individuals were registered with the employment services of the continent and autonomous regions, a number that represents 69.2% of a total of 437,080 job applications.

There are 8,149 fewer people registered in employment centers compared to September 2024, with “those registered less than 12 months ago (-8,219), those looking for a new job (-8,440) and those over 25 years old (-7,981) contributing to this decline.

In the chain comparison, that is, compared to August, there were 962 more people registered in employment centers in September.

It is the second consecutive month of a chain rise in unemployment, after six consecutive months of decline, and after in July, as happened in the previous month, the number of people registered in employment centers reached the lowest value in two years.

Considering the professional groups of registered unemployed people on the continent, the most representative in September, in descending order, were “unskilled workers” (28.4%); “personal service workers, security protection workers and salespeople” (19.4%); “specialists in intellectual and scientific activities” (12.4%) and “administrative staff” (10.5%).

Regarding the professional groups with the greatest expression among the unemployed, compared to the same period last year, the IEFP highlights the decrease among “farmers and qualified workers in agriculture, fishing and forestry” (-17%), “administrative staff” (-11.2%), “technicians and intermediate level professions” (-8.3%) and “qualified workers in industry, construction and craftsmen” (-6.5%).

On the other hand, there was an increase in unemployment in the professional group of “representatives of the legislative power, executive bodies, directors, directors and executive managers” (+14.1%) and “unskilled workers” (+4.2%).

In regional terms, in September, unemployment fell year-on-year in all areas with the exception of the Centre, Alentejo and Algarve, with the sharpest drop (-18.5%) occurring in Madeira.

Compared to the previous month, the month of September saw an increase in unemployment in all regions, except in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley and the Azores.

At the end of the month under analysis, unsatisfied job offers reached 18,799 in employment services across the country, which corresponds to an increase in offers on file in the annual analysis (+6,846; +57.3%) and compared to the previous month (+40; +0.2%).
