Nelly Furtado announced her retirement from the stage in the “near future”.
The Portuguese-descendant artist marked the 25th anniversary of her debut album “Whoa, Nelly!” on social media, highlighting her decision to now look for “new creative and personal challenges suited to this phase of my life”.
In a long message addressed to fans, the voice of ‘I’m Like a Bird’ and ‘Maneater’ states: “I’ve enjoyed my career immensely and still love writing music as I always saw it as a hobby that I was lucky enough to turn into a career. I will forever be a songwriter.”
Furtado, 46, has released seven albums since 2000. “Loose,” his third, has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. In 2014, she was awarded the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the then President of the Portuguese Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
In recent years, after a prolonged absence, he returned to the stage. He performed at the North Music Festival, in Porto, in 2024, his first performance on national soil since 2011. In August, he reacted to comments regarding his physical appearance and clothing choices. At a concert in Manchester (England), he printed on his t-shirt and the boots he wore “better than ever”, a reference to the song with the same title that he released in 2024.
At the beginning of the year, the singer had declared, on Instagram, her resolution for 2025: to commit to “body neutrality”. “Celebrate yourself freely, celebrate your individuality and understand that it is perfectly possible to feel good about what you see in the mirror”he said then.
