Impact on agriculture and prices

BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Bird flu continues to spread in Germany, leading to a massive culling of poultry. The economic consequences are already being felt, with experts warning of rising prices for eggs and poultry products.

In Germany, the spread of bird flu has led to drastic measures: over half a million chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys have been culled since the beginning of September. This decision was made to curb the spread of the highly infectious H5N1 virus, which is rampant in both poultry flocks and wild birds. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), the federal agency responsible for monitoring animal diseases, has registered 30 outbreaks in poultry farms and 73 cases in wild birds.

The situation is particularly critical in the northern and eastern federal states such as Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Most cases were reported here. Infections have also been confirmed in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. The authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate are reporting unusual dynamics, as new suspected cases are reported every day.

While the direct danger to humans is considered to be low, the economic impact could be significant. The chairman of the Bavarian Poultry Association, Robert Schmack, warns of a possible price increase of up to 40% for eggs. This could hit consumers particularly hard in the run-up to Christmas, although the President of the Central Association of the German Poultry Industry, Hans-Peter Goldknick, does not expect any short-term price jumps.

The current crisis also highlights the vulnerability of industrial animal husbandry. The Greens in the Bundestag criticize the conditions in factory farms, which offer ideal conditions for the spread of viruses. The FLI recommends avoiding contact with dead birds and not bringing dirty shoes near animal enclosures to prevent the spread of the virus.
