Mexico City.- In a decade, the number of deaths annually in Mexico, while the population registered an increase of five percent, with heart conditions and those related to sugar in the body being the main causes of death.

Last year, 2024, 818,437 deaths were recorded in the country, as revealed by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI)while in 2014 the same measurement recorded 655,688 deaths, that is, almost 25 percent less.

The above contrasts with the fact that said Institute currently estimates 126 million 14 thousand 24 inhabitants in the country, only five percent more than what was calculated in 2015.

The number of annual deaths increased gradually, since between 2015 and 2016 the cases did not reach 700 thousand, between 2017 and 2019 this last number of annual deaths was exceeded, and in 2020, the year in which the COVID-19 pandemic began in the country, there were more than one million deaths.

In 2021 the INEGI recorded a record by counting 1,122,249 deaths in the country; however, in subsequent years the annual figure remained between 799,869 and 847,716 deaths annually. This last number was the one that precisely resulted in 2024.

Las heart diseases They appear as the main cause of loss of life in this country, since almost a quarter of the more than 840 thousand deaths registered last year, would have occurred as a consequence of some condition of this type.

The second cause of death in Mexico is the so-called “Diabetes Mellitus”, a disease that would have caused the death of 13.7 percent of the deaths registered in 2024.
