An opinion poll showed that the majority of Israelis do not rule out a political assassination such as that of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, while they believe that the United States is in control of the decision on Israeli military operations in Gaza, despite the ceasefire agreement that entered into force on October 10, 2025.
An opinion poll, conducted by the Israeli Channel 12 in cooperation with the Midgham Research Institute and published yesterday, Friday, showed that 67% of Israelis fear a political assassination similar to the assassination of Rabin.
This result came against the backdrop of the 30th anniversary of Rabin’s assassination on November 4, 1995, according to what the channel reported.
On that day, right-wing extremist Yigal Amir assassinated Rabin by shooting three bullets into his back, while he was leaving a festival in support of peace and non-violence, in a square in Tel Aviv.
The channel reported that 17% of Israelis do not see any fear that this will happen again, while it noted that 16% said they did not know.
On the other hand, the poll showed that 67% of Israelis consider the United States to be the main decision maker regarding the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip.
The poll reported that 24% of Israelis believe that Tel Aviv is responsible for leading these operations in Gaza, while the channel did not indicate the opinion of the remaining 9%, who usually refrain from answering or choose the “I don’t know” item.
The poll also showed that 69% of Israelis believe that Tel Aviv has come under American guardianship, and that 23% “strongly agree” with this opinion, without mentioning the position of the remaining 8%.
The Haredi controversy
The poll shed light on the dispute over the law on conscripting ultra-Orthodox Jews into the army, as 51% of Israelis supported depriving those who do not perform military service of the right to vote in the Knesset, while 42% opposed that.
The Haredim continue their protests against military service following the Supreme Court’s decision on June 25, 2024, obligating them to conscript and prohibiting the provision of financial aid to religious institutions whose students refuse.
The Haredim constitute about 13% of Israel’s population of 10 million people, and they refuse military service under the pretext of devoting their lives to studying the Torah, stressing that integration into secular society constitutes a threat to their religious identity and the continuity of their society.
The voice of senior rabbis, whose statements are seen as a religious fatwa for the Haredim, calls for rejecting conscription, and even “tearing up” the summons orders.
The Israeli opposition accuses Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of seeking to pass a law that exempts the Haredim from conscription, in response to the demands of the Shas and United Torah Judaism parties, which withdrew earlier this year from the government, but are preparing to return as soon as a law that meets their demands is passed.
