Incoming Cardiff Uni student secures top grades despite anxiety struggles

An incoming Cardiff University student has secured top grades in his A-Levels, despite mental health struggles due to anxiety.

Following A-Level results day, aspiring maths student Charlie Bainbridge will be coming to Cardiff with outstanding marks including three A*s and one A.

Although results day is a stressful time for anyone, 18-year-old Charlie felt this pressure more acutely as he tackled unfamiliar environments and travelling.

The former Coleg y Cymoedd student studied maths, further maths and physics. He told the Caerphilly Observer how although he had a passion for his studies, this was clouded by anxiety about attending and getting to classes.

Charlie detailed how anxiety impacted him to such an extent throughout his studies that he couldn’t attend school trips, but he didn’t let it hinder his dream of studying maths.

He said: “I knew I wanted to study maths, but I also knew that if I was going to succeed, I needed to be in a place where I felt safe and supported, and Cardiff will give me that.”

He further thanked his school for giving him the ability to grow into his own character, whilst still helping him achieve success.

“I think very highly of the support I’ve received from my tutors. They were all so approachable and always willing to answer questions, but at the same time, also encouraged learners to think independently and manage their own time, which worked for me,” Charlie continued.

Looking ahead, Charlie spoke about not knowing what career path he’ll take, but explained he’s seeking one in a maths-related field. He’s considering teaching, particle or quantum physics, and academic research, as well as potentially pursuing education beyond his Bachelor’s degree.

“Maybe pursuing a doctorate or even taking a second degree in physics. What’s most important to me is finding a career that keeps me mentally stimulated and always learning,” the incoming Cardiff student added.
