The U.S. Social Security Administration has announced that Social Security and Supplemental Security (SSI) payments will increase by 2.8 percent in 2026. This cost of living adjustment (COLA) is intended to ensure benefits keep pace with inflation and provide financial security to recipients. For pension recipients, this means an average increase of about $56 per month.
Starting in January 2026, nearly 71 million Social Security recipients will benefit from this adjustment, while approximately 7.5 million SSI recipients will already receive increased payments as of December 31 of the previous year. This annual adjustment is an essential part of the Social Security Administration’s efforts to reflect economic realities and provide a foundation for financial security.
In addition to the COLA increase, there will also be other adjustments, including an increase in the maximum taxable income for Social Security from $176,100 in 2025 to $184,500 in 2026. The increase follows a 2.5 percent COLA in 2025, with the average adjustment value over the past decade at about 3.1 percent. For 2026, the estimated average monthly benefits will be as follows: $2,071 for retirees, $3,208 for elderly married couples, and $1,919 for single elderly widows or widowers. SSI recipients will see an increase in federal payment standards to $994 for individuals and $1,491 for couples.
