Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) will carry out an “exhaustive technical survey” of the needs of Estrada Nacional 2 (EN2), which connects Chaves to Faro, to improve the safety conditions of the route, the Government revealed this Friday, October 24th.
In a statement, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing indicates that, as part of the trip carried out by Minister Miguel Pinto Luz in recent days via EN2, some decisions have already been taken, namely to mandate IP to survey the needs of the road that runs more than 700 kilometers, uniting the North and South of the country.
In addition to improving the safety conditions of the route, the aim is to requalify the landmarks and verges, create parks for motorhomes and motorbikes and other rest areas, improve informative signage “to highlight the cultural, heritage and gastronomic offer of each municipality, together with Turismo de Portugal”in addition to “building larger landmarks at kilometer zero and kilometer 738 that mark the beginning and end of the EN2 route in Chaves and Faro, respectively”, indicates the Ministry.
As Pinto Luz announced during his trip along the EN2, which began on Tuesday in Chaves and ended this Thursday in the Algarve, the section between kilometers 425 and 467.9, in the districts of Santarém and Portalegre, which crosses the municipalities of Abrantes, Ponte de Sor and Avis, will also be requalified.
The objective of the project, which will represent an investment of 10 million euros, will be to reinforce the safety and circulation conditions of this section, whose state of conservation is considered “unsatisfactory”, recalls the Ministry.
In the district of Faro, the road platform will be replaced at kilometer 710 of the EN2, in São Brás de Alportel, “following the collapse of the pavement caused by geotechnical phenomena associated with the bad weather recorded last winter”, the note reads.
Quoted in the statement, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing highlights the Government’s “permanent dialogue” with “the representatives of local authorities – whatever political color they have”, as “was evident in these 738 kilometers covered, across 35 municipalities”.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, among the concerns conveyed by the mayors is the need to declassify urban sections of the EN2, the need for a decision regarding the route of Main Itinerary 3 (IP3) in a motorway profile between Coimbra and Mortágua and the construction of an access from motorway 2 (A2) to the future emergency service heliport in Vila de Rei.
