The increasing amount of space debris in low Earth orbit poses a growing threat to satellites and spacecraft. Currently, satellites often have to perform complex maneuvers to avoid collisions with debris from previous rocket launches, retired satellites and collisions. These pieces of debris can even fall back to earth and cause damage.
The ALBATOR project, a collaboration of scientists from industry and academia funded by the European Commission, proposes an innovative solution: using ion beams to move space debris from a safe distance. This method avoids the risks associated with capturing or docking with the debris and provides a safer and more versatile solution for space sustainability.
Using ion beams could provide a breakthrough way to reposition space debris without physically touching it. This would not only increase the safety of satellites and the International Space Station, but also extend the life of existing spacecraft. The technology is based on a plasma-assisted ion beam system that is able to deflect debris from its path.
However, where the space debris should ultimately be moved remains an unresolved problem. Some proposed systems that require physical contact with the debris suggest deorbiting it and returning it safely to Earth. Other approaches involve maneuvering large parts out of the orbit of satellites or the International Space Station. With new fleets of satellites launching weekly, space above Earth is becoming increasingly dense and dangerous, making the need for a solution more urgent.
